A Photo of the Century!

On Sept. 10, 1987, Jerry Falwell promised he'd go down the Typhoon waterslide at Heritage Island if 1,000 people donated $1,000 to the faltering PTL. Falwell took another "plunge" in October, resigning as president of PTL.

This photo was included in "The Best of Photojournalism" 1987 Pictures of the Year book presented by the National Press Photographers Association. In September 1999, The Associated Press selected it as one of the top 100 national photos of the century.

In January 2000, it was featured in Wireless Age magazine, "the information source for Christian media," in its edition devoted to "Portraits of the 20th Century."
