And the stump of a pipe he held
tight in his teeth ...
Vernon Grant was an illustrator
best known for his whimsical magazine covers, especially those
in the 1930s and '40s featuring Santa Claus. In 1932, he created
the Snap! Crackle! and Pop! characters for Kelloggís.
Grant was heralded as "America's favorite children's artist."
After he married, he moved to Rock Hill. He cofounded Rock Hill's
annual spring festival, Come-See-Me, and created its mascot,
Glen the Frog. The Vernon Grant Collection is displayed at the
Museum of York County, where a gallery is named in his honor.
Each year, the museum produces Christmas cards and ornaments
based on his designs. A series of nursery rhyme prints he designed
also is sold at the museum. |
